Liquid crystals make a HDTV LCD TV different.
When the salesman at the electronics store asks whether you want to buy a HDTV LCD TV, you may or may not know what he/she is talking about. For those that are not aware of the latest technology in televisions, an LCD television is a flat screen TV that uses Liquid Crystal Display technology to bring you a sharp image on the screen. This is the same technology that has been used for years in cell phones and camcorders.
Which model is the best LCD HDTV to buy? This is something that you will have to do some research for as different people have different needs in televisions, whether it is in the size, the color or the sound and picture quality. As a rule, just about all of the major TV manufacturers have the same standards in high definition televisions and they lower the price to stiffen the competition.
What makes LCD technology so different? The panels of an LCD television screen are made of two layers of material that looks something like glass. These layers are polarized and glued together. A special coating containing the liquid crystals is applied to one of the layers and an electric current is passed between the crystals. The crystals in an LCD TV do not generate their own light. They do need an external source of light, such as a fluorescent light bulb so that the picture will come to light on the screen.
LCD panels are different from those in plasma and standard television sets. They don't have any phosphors that light up which is why the LCD televisions are flatter and don't need as much power to operate. This increases the options that homeowners have as to where they will place the TV. It can be hung on the wall, put on a desk or a small cabinet quite easily. There is no picture tube inside, which decreases the chances of problems developing. LCD HDTV is a new yet mature television technology.
